Houston Book Signing for "More Than My Sentence" Spotlights Life After Incarceration

New anthology featuring eight firsthand accounts of incarceration, reentry, and rebuilding officially releases November 1, with a Houston book signing scheduled for November 14.

A prison sentence may become part of someone's history, but it doesn't have to define the rest of their life. That message is at the center of More Than My Sentence: The Lives Built After Incarceration, a new collaborative anthology curated by Houston-based publisher Ms Cat, officially releasing November 1, 2026.

To celebrate the release, Ms Cat Consulting will host a book signing on Saturday, November 14, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Quad Sports Bar & Restaurant, located at 4608 Almeda Road in Houston, Texas.

The event marks the debut of This Should've Took Me Out, an ongoing collaborative book series dedicated to amplifying firsthand accounts of adversity, survival, and rebuilding.

More Than My Sentence features eight contributors sharing personal experiences of incarceration and the challenges of rebuilding their lives. The stories explore accountability, lost time, family relationships, personal transformation, and the often-overlooked realities of reentering society.

Rather than presenting incarceration through statistics or headlines, the anthology gives readers an opportunity to hear directly from individuals whose lives extend far beyond their criminal records.

"These contributors are not asking anyone to forget their past," Ms Cat writes in the book's curator's note. "A record can tell you something that happened in someone's life. It cannot tell you everything about who they are today."

The November 14 book signing will bring the publication beyond the page, providing an opportunity for readers, families, community supporters, and advocates to connect with the people and experiences behind the anthology.

The event is also intended to establish the foundation for future releases in the This Should've Took Me Out series. Upcoming volumes will explore parental loss, medical survival, domestic abuse, and other experiences that have shaped the lives of their contributors.

With a new volume scheduled for release each month, the series seeks to create an ongoing platform for stories that challenge assumptions, encourage meaningful conversations, and remind readers that difficult experiences do not have to be the final chapter.

China dad handed 3-year race ban after dragging rope-tied son around marathon

A marathon runner in China who dragged a nine-year-old boy around a half-marathon using a rope has been handed a three-year ban and had his result erased. Video clips of the child with a rope around his waist struggling to keep up as the pair competed in the Zhengzhou Marathon in Henan province have gone viral, and sparked intense debate online. While some social media users expressed surprise at the boy’s endurance, most condemned the incident, which is believed to have involved a father and...

Andrea Atzeni optimistic Crimson Flash will relish rise in trip in Group Two Premier Bowl

Andrea Atzeni is confident the rise to 1,200m will suit Crimson Flash when the classy sprinter chases a career-best victory in Sunday’s Group Two Lukfook Jewellery Premier Bowl at Sha Tin. After recording four wins in a strong second campaign in Hong Kong, Crimson Flash was sent off the $5.6 third favourite in his return but found the 1,000m too sharp when fifth to Colourful King in the Group Three National Day Cup. Atzeni said the Mark Newnham-trained gelding also didn’t appreciate being...

Wales, Australia, managing David Silva all part of Sha Tin coach’s rich tapestry

Tom Ballantyne was playing a pre-season friendly for Welsh club Monmouth Town when he “got clattered” and sustained a tibia plateau fracture. “I broke my knee joint, essentially,” Ballantyne said. “I never played again”. So began a life investment in coaching that would see Ballantyne stacking supermarket shelves overnight, then spending long days on the grass. He has been employed by Cardiff City and Aston Villa, and managed in three of Australia’s six states. The Englishman was the man Jim...

Coach of China’s women’s football team leaves post eight months before World Cup

Ante Milicic has left his post as coach of China’s national women’s team, the football association said on Friday, eight months before the World Cup. The 52-year-old Australian had been in charge since May 2024 and led the team to the semi-finals of the Women’s Asian Cup in March. That finish earned them a spot at next year’s World Cup in Brazil. Milicic also recently took China to fourth place at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan after losing 2-0 to North Korea in the semi-finals. “After...
