T. Madden & Associates, P.C. Highlights Talk About Your Medicines Month (TAYMM) by Urging Georgia Patients to Double-Check Prescriptions

Oct 16, 2026

Decatur personal injury lawyer Terance Madden explains how dispensing mistakes happen, the warning signs patients should watch for, and how patients can protect themselves.

Decatur, United States, October 16, 2026 -- In recognition of Talk About Your Medicines Month this October, T. Madden & Associates, P.C., a Decatur personal injury law firm that represents victims of pharmacy negligence and catastrophic injury, is urging Georgia patients and families to verify every prescription before taking it, as a single error at the pharmacy counter can permanently change a person’s life.

Sponsored each October by the National Council on Patient Information and Education, Talk About Your Medicines Month encourages patients, caregivers, and health care professionals to have open conversations about how medicines are prescribed, dispensed, and taken. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration receives more than 100,000 reports each year associated with suspected medication errors, and many begin with a simple mix-up that a quick conversation could have caught.

Pharmacy errors can take several forms: a prescription filled at the wrong strength, a medication swapped for one with a similar name, or a label printed with incorrect directions. Strength errors are especially dangerous with prescriptions like prednisone, which is sold in tablets ranging from 1 mg to 50 mg and is often prescribed on a tapering schedule.

“Most people trust that what’s in the bottle matches what their doctor prescribed,” said Decatur personal injury lawyer Terance Madden, founder of T. Madden & Associates, P.C. “But when it doesn’t, the consequences can be permanent, and the patient is often the last line of defense.”

Why Dispensing Errors Happen

Most pharmacy errors are not the result of a single careless moment. High prescription volumes, staffing pressures, and constant interruptions can make it easier for a mistake to slip through. Medications with look-alike or sound-alike names, such as hydroxyzine and hydralazine, are easily confused. A misplaced decimal point or a misread prescription can turn a 5 mg dose into 50 mg. Taper schedules, which change the dose over several days or weeks, add another layer of complexity for both the pharmacy and the patient.

Warning Signs and What Patients Should Do

T. Madden & Associates, P.C. recommends these checks at every pickup:

  1. Compare the medicine name, strength, and directions on the label with what the doctor prescribed.

  2. Ask before taking pills that look different from a previous fill.

  3. New prescriptions and taper schedules should be reviewed with the pharmacist at the counter.

  4. Report sudden or unusual side effects, such as vision changes, to your physician right away.

  5. Keep an up-to-date list of every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, and supplement taken, and bring it to every appointment.

  6. Use one pharmacy whenever possible so the pharmacist can screen for interactions.

If a medication error is suspected, patients should contact their physician immediately rather than adjusting the dose on their own. Keeping the bottle, label, remaining pills, and receipt helps the physician and pharmacist confirm exactly what was dispensed.

Questions to Ask at the Pharmacy Counter

Talk About Your Medicines Month is a reminder that pharmacists are a valuable, and often underused, resource. Before leaving the counter, patients should feel comfortable asking: What is this medicine for? How much should I take, and when? What side effects should I watch for? Will it interact with anything else I take? What should I do if I miss a dose?

Older adults and people managing several prescriptions face a higher risk of medication errors. Family members and caregivers can help by reviewing labels at each refill, attending appointments when possible, and making sure every provider has a complete medication list.

“A two-minute conversation at the pharmacy counter can prevent a lifetime of consequences,” Attorney Madden said. “We want every Georgia family to feel confident asking questions about the medicines they take.”

‘Passing down of the torch’ to young Asian Games winners bodes well for Hong Kong: John Lee

Hong Kong’s athletes were praised for producing “a beautiful harvest of medals” at this year’s Asian Games, and the success of the delegation’s younger members bode well for the future, the city’s leader said on Monday. A first tennis, a rugby sevens three-peat, combined with success on the water, in the pool, and on the squash court all led to a historic tally of 54 medals and a record number of gold over a fortnight in Japan. While the rise of the city’s younger athletes was in many ways a...

Total turnover rise pleases Jockey Club as host of Australian gallopers eye HKIR

A decline in local turnover might have given Jockey Club boss Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges cause for concern to start the season, but a surge in wagering on overseas races has helped boost total turnover to a healthy figure. After 13 of 88 local meetings, total turnover on local and overseas races was up 12.5 per cent on last year to HK$24.8 billion. In his CEO blog published on the Jockey Club website before Sunday’s Sha Tin meeting, Engelbrecht-Bresges said wagering on Hong Kong racing was...
