African AI Film Festival launches its inaugural edition in Hollywood, with a Kampala screening connecting generative AI, African storytelling, and creator education.
Los Angeles, California, United States, October 3, 2026 -- The African AI Film Festival has announced its inaugural 2026 edition, launching with a live festival event in Hollywood, California, on November 21, 2026, followed by a screening in Kampala, Uganda, on December 12, 2026. The two-continent launch will bring together filmmakers working with generative artificial intelligence while establishing a platform focused on African and African diaspora storytelling.

Founded by Los Angeles-based filmmaker and creative entrepreneur Patrick Sekyaya, the festival reflects his background in traditional filmmaking and his recent work in AI-driven production. Sekyaya received training and mentorship through Maisha Film Lab, One Fine Day Films under Tom Tykwer, the Durban Talent Campus, and the Berlinale Talent Campus.
The inaugural program will feature AI short films, animation, documentaries, and work from student and emerging filmmakers. Participating filmmakers are required to disclose the artificial intelligence tools used in their productions, with eligibility tied to African heritage, stories, languages, history, culture, or collaboration.
Hollywood Festival and Kampala Screening
The Hollywood festival event will take place on November 21, followed by a Kampala screening on December 12. The two events are intended to connect the Los Angeles filmmaking and technology community with African and diaspora creators.
For Sekyaya, the Kampala screening also represents a return to the country where his filmmaking career developed. His feature film The Ugandan was selected for FESPACO in 2013, and its young actor Benjamin Abemigisha won Best Child Actor at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
Sekyaya said the festival responds to changes in filmmaking economics while addressing the importance of ensuring African creators participate in the development of AI-enabled cinema.
"AI is shattering the financial barriers of Hollywood, but we have to ensure it doesn't build new geographic ones. The African AI Film Festival is about making sure African creators aren't just consumers of the AI video revolution, but the ones directing it."
Generative AI can be used across different stages of production, including video, animation, imagery, voice, music, and script development. The festival's programming places these capabilities within a filmmaking context centered on storytelling and cultural representation.
Storytelling at the Center of AI Cinema
The festival distinguishes its approach by placing filmmaking craft and cultural storytelling alongside emerging technology. Rather than treating AI as the sole focus, its program is structured around films and filmmakers using these tools to develop narratives connected to African experiences and perspectives.
"We are grounding futuristic tech in the soul of classic cinema. This isn't a Silicon Valley hackathon. This is a homecoming for storytellers," Sekyaya said.
The festival's guidelines address AI disclosure, rights, consent, and the responsible use of synthetic media. Films that use AI only for limited technical adjustments, such as basic color correction, do not qualify as AI films under the festival's criteria.
The inaugural categories include AI Short Film and AI Animation, each with a 1- to 10-minute limit, AI Documentary with a 5- to 20-minute limit, and a Student and Emerging category for first-time filmmakers and students.
Films will be judged by a pan-African jury including Joan Kabugu (Kenya), Amira Sayed (Egypt), T.J. Seaman (Nigeria) and Pauline Nabbosa (Uganda), with an advisory board including Likarion Wainaina (Kenya), Carolyn Carew (South Africa), Malik Afegbua (Nigeria) and Rita Lamotte (Morocco).
The festival will present nine awards, including Best of Festival, the Cultural Resonance Award and the Audience Award, decided by public vote.

Submissions Open Through October 20
Submissions are open on FilmFreeway until October 20, 2026. Entry is free for Africa-based and student filmmakers.
The submission process gives filmmakers working across the continent and within emerging creative communities an opportunity to present projects that explore African stories, perspectives, languages, cultures, and experiences through artificial intelligence.
Building an Educational Pipeline Across Africa
The 2026 festival launch is also intended to introduce a broader educational initiative. Sekyaya plans to develop physical workshops across Africa that will provide filmmakers with practical knowledge of generative AI and creative production workflows.
"Our festival in Hollywood and screening in Kampala are designed to inspire, but our upcoming workshops across Africa are designed to equip. We aren't just showing audiences the future of film; we are handing them the camera."
The educational initiative is connected to the African AI Arts & Culture Institute, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation which runs the festival. Its stated focus includes education, mentorship, and expanding opportunities for African digital storytellers working with emerging creative technologies.
The initiative also builds on Sekyaya's work through ViralHQ.ai, an AI video studio he founded in 2025. His work with AI-powered commercial video production informs the festival's broader objective of making emerging production tools more accessible to filmmakers who may face financial or geographic barriers.
Expanding Access to AI Filmmaking
The African AI Film Festival's programming is designed around the participation of African and African diaspora creators. Its eligibility requirements allow films to qualify through the filmmaker's African heritage, an African story or setting, the use of African languages or cultural elements, or collaboration with African creators.
The festival also requires filmmakers to maintain appropriate rights to their work and prohibits nonconsensual likenesses and deceptive deepfakes. These requirements are intended to establish clear expectations around the use of AI-generated and AI-assisted material.
The festival's programming and educational efforts are supported by partners including ElevenLabs, SHAIKE, Native Noise, ViralHQ.ai, GenFlix, Nigerians Report, and H3nzyAI.
The Hollywood festival and the Kampala screening will mark the public launch of the festival while introducing its longer-term objective of developing an annual platform and educational network for African AI creativity. The organization plans to extend its work beyond screenings through workshops and creator-focused programming across the continent.

India will clash with Pakistan in a blockbuster opening-day clash when the “unique and inspiring” Hong Kong Cricket Sixes gets under way later this month. The city team, meanwhile, currently nursing the deep frustration over being eliminated from the Asian Games after their quarter-final with Pakistan on Monday was washed out, will slug it out with Australia and England in an intriguing group. This 2026 edition will be the third iteration since the Sixes was removed from cold storage in...
A week is a long time in racing. In that period, Hong Kong’s mile division has seen dramatic changes. Zac Purton is the new rider of Group One Champions Mile winner My Wish, hopping off Little Paradise who has been transferred from Jimmy Ting Koon-ho to Danny Shum Chap-shing after his disappointing defeat in last Sunday’s Group Three Celebration Cup (1,400m). Invincible Ibis stamped his Group One Hong Kong Mile credentials with victory in the Celebration Cup and while Romantic Warrior’s...
Kimi Antonelli will have to deal with an unfamiliar track and potentially heavy rain as he aims to recover from the “worst weekend” of his 2026 Formula 1 title challenge. The unusually named Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia takes Antonelli and his rivals to a track Formula 1 last visited in 2017 – when he was 11 – in a race hurriedly added to the calendar because of the disruption caused by the Iran war. It will take place at the Sepang International Circuit, about 60 kilometres (35 miles) south...
Caspar Fownes was left scratching his head after Alpha Strike’s wayward win at Sha Tin last time out but is not expecting similar antics when he goes for back-to-back wins at Sha Tin on Sunday. The speedy son of I Am Immortal won his only start in Australia pre-import and made a winning local start last October before going winless in five subsequent runs. He returned this campaign as a much improved model, lowering the colours of Solid State in a devastating performance, despite wandering all...
Hong Kong’s sailors had themselves a golden day at the Asian Games on Friday, while tennis star Coleman Wong Chak-lam has a shot at one of his own, although there is more at stake than just gold in his men’s singles final on Saturday. Victory over China’s Wu Yibing, whom he beat in the third round at the Games in Hangzhou, would earn Wong a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Wu also has that target in mind. Saturday could prove to be a historic one for Hong Kong’s athletes. The gold medals...
The newly founded basketball league Project B earlier this week announced the first stop of its inaugural global basketball grand prix: in Hangzhou in January next year. While the debut of the global basketball tour has seen a slight delay – from its intended start this November – and the announcement of the Chinese host city came months later than anticipated, Project B is one of many major sporting events to be held in mainland China between now and the end of next year. “China has always had...
Max Verstappen said he wants to win “at least one race this year” as the four-time Formula 1 champion sits in an unfamiliar sixth place in the championship standings after 15 rounds. Having dominated Formula 1 in recent years, Verstappen has managed only seven podium finishes this season and is still searching for that elusive first win, coming close with second-place finishes in his past two outings in Madrid and Baku. Verstappen’s desperate charge against George Russell on the final...
Most of the hype on the National Day undercard surrounded Hot Delight and Jedi Spurs, but it was Sky Jewellery and Ka Ying Lightning who stole the show and underlined their own immense talent with impressive victories. Sky Jewellery stamped himself a potential Group One Hong Kong Mile contender with a barnstorming return in the Class Two Beijing Handicap (1,400m), improving his record to six wins from nine starts after gunning down Hot Delight late. And Ka Ying Lightning maintained his perfect...
David Eustace has not ruled out international targets for his crack sprinter Colourful King after he ran riot to win the Group Three National Day Cup (1,000m) at Sha Tin on Thursday. Sent off the $2.2 favourite, those who took skinny odds about Colourful King had very few worries, with the Blue Point galloper breaking well and sitting handy behind duelling leaders Beauty Waves and Magical Control. The latter won that argument handily at the 400m pole, but he was always being stalked by Colourful...
The Premier League has won a lengthy legal battle with Manchester City over financial impropriety, but the consequences could leave lasting damage for a league that has long been the envy of world football. City face severe sanctions after being found guilty of more than 100 charges between 2009 and 2018, with an independent commission exposing “sham” contracts to artificially inflate the club’s revenues and reduce costs by more than £900 million (US$1.2 billion). A hefty points deduction...
Philippines tennis star Alexandra Eala saw her bid for Asian Games gold, and qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, end in Thursday’s semi-finals after a stunning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to China’s world No 85 Wang Xiyu. Top seed and world No 18 Eala was looking to become the first woman from the Philippines to win the title. The 21-year-old will instead go home with only a bronze medal, which she had also won at the last Games in Hangzhou, where she also won bronze in the mixed...
Sha Tin Racecourse was filled with music, acrobatic displays and cheering on Thursday as some 10,000 tourists and local residents gathered to celebrate National Day. Despite Hong Kong sweltering in 33-degree Celsius (91.4 Fahrenheit) heat on October 1, spectators fanned themselves under clear morning skies, eagerly awaiting special performances for the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the marquee Group 3 National Day Cup. Jockey Club boss Winfried...
