Alexis 420's 50-state guide shows tourists 21 and older can buy cannabis in 23 states, visiting patients in 10 more plus DC and no visitors in 17, ahead of Thanksgiving and year-end holiday travel.
Virginia Beach, United States, October 25, 2026 -- Alexis 420, a free directory of licensed cannabis dispensaries in the United States, has published a guide that answers whether tourists can legally buy cannabis in each of the 50 states and Washington, DC, ahead of the Thanksgiving and year-end holiday travel season. The guide sorts every state by what it allows visitors to do and links to deeper state guides on purchase limits, taxes, accepted IDs and where cannabis can be used.

AAA projected that 81.8 million people would travel at least 50 miles from home over Thanksgiving in 2025, at least 73 million of them by car. Cannabis, also called marijuana, is sold to adults 21 and older in 23 states, and what a visitor may buy changes at every state line.
The guide, titled "Can Tourists Buy Weed? Every State, Checked," is at https://alexis420.com/guides/can-out-of-state-visitors-buy-weed/. Each state's entry gives the visitor rule in plain language, with a link to the state's own rule.
Where visitors can buy, state by state
23 states sell to any visitor 21 or older
Adults 21 and older with a valid government photo ID from any state can buy at licensed stores in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. Two of those states have rules that matter most to visitors. Illinois sells visitors half the resident limit, 30 grams of flower, 5 grams of concentrate and 500 milligrams of THC in edibles. Since March 20, 2026, it has been illegal in Ohio to have cannabis that was not bought at an Ohio store, so visitors cannot bring any in.
10 states and DC sell to visiting medical patients
Visiting patients with a medical card from home can buy in Arkansas, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Utah, each under its own rules. Oklahoma issues a 30-day temporary license for $104.30, and Utah issues a 21-day card for $15. In Washington, DC, adults 21 and older from anywhere can self-register online for a temporary patient registration, from $10 for 3 days.
17 states have no store that sells to visitors
No state-licensed store sells cannabis to visitors in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Some of those states run medical programs for their own residents, and Virginia's adult-use stores have not opened yet.
What else changes at the state line
Purchase limits are only one of the rules that change from state to state, and taxes, accepted IDs, store hours and payment differ as well.
Taxes. New York charges the same 13% cannabis tax at every licensed store, with no sales tax on top. In Chicago, the total tax on flower at or under 35% THC is 26.5%, and in Minneapolis the total tax on cannabis is 24.025%.
ID. California stores accept a military ID or a passport from any country, while Minnesota law leaves military IDs off its list of accepted IDs.
Hours. Since June 12, 2026, Illinois stores can stay open until 2 a.m. with local approval, while no licensed California store may sell or deliver after 10 p.m.
Payment. Credit cards rarely work at dispensaries because card networks avoid cannabis while it is illegal under federal law, so the guides advise bringing cash or a debit card.
Federal law, cars and public places
Adult-use cannabis is still illegal under federal law, so carrying it across a state line is a federal crime, even between two states that allow it. TSA refers illegal drugs found during airport screening to law enforcement, and national parks and other federal land follow federal law. Buying legally does not make it legal to use anywhere, and the guide warns visitors against using cannabis in public or in a car. New York is one exception on public use, generally allowing cannabis to be smoked wherever tobacco smoking is allowed, outside places such as New York City's parks and beaches.
Finding a licensed dispensary nearby
The guides connect to the Alexis 420 directory, which lists 9,799 licensed dispensaries in 36 states and Washington, DC, each drawn from its state's official license list. Travelers can search https://alexis420.com/ by city, ZIP code or store name to find licensed dispensaries near them, sorted by distance and showing which stores are open now, which stay open late and which deliver. Because every store comes from a state license list, smoke shops that call themselves dispensaries without a license do not appear.
"Someone who searches 'dispensary near me' in Chicago and someone who searches it in Los Angeles are walking into two different sets of rules," said the Alexis 420 team. "The limit, the tax, the ID the store will take and where it can be used all change at the state line. These guides answer those questions from each state's own laws, so travelers know what to expect before they reach the counter."
For dispensary owners
Listing on Alexis 420 is free, and dispensary owners can claim their store's listing at no cost to add photos, hours, a menu link and deals and to publish posts that appear on the store's page. A four-minute video for owners showing how a listing works is on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukNreEv3Y5E.

Andrea Atzeni is confident the rise to 1,200m will suit Crimson Flash when the classy sprinter chases a career-best victory in Sunday’s Group Two Lukfook Jewellery Premier Bowl at Sha Tin. After recording four wins in a strong second campaign in Hong Kong, Crimson Flash was sent off the $5.6 third favourite in his return but found the 1,000m too sharp when fifth to Colourful King in the Group Three National Day Cup. Atzeni said the Mark Newnham-trained gelding also didn’t appreciate being...

Tom Ballantyne was playing a pre-season friendly for Welsh club Monmouth Town when he “got clattered” and sustained a tibia plateau fracture. “I broke my knee joint, essentially,” Ballantyne said. “I never played again”. So began a life investment in coaching that would see Ballantyne stacking supermarket shelves overnight, then spending long days on the grass. He has been employed by Cardiff City and Aston Villa, and managed in three of Australia’s six states. The Englishman was the man Jim...

Ante Milicic has left his post as coach of China’s national women’s team, the football association said on Friday, eight months before the World Cup. The 52-year-old Australian had been in charge since May 2024 and led the team to the semi-finals of the Women’s Asian Cup in March. That finish earned them a spot at next year’s World Cup in Brazil. Milicic also recently took China to fourth place at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan after losing 2-0 to North Korea in the semi-finals. “After...
Matthew Cheung rode a wave of emotion and a little bit of luck to take a three-shot lead in the Link Hong Kong Open on Friday, leaving himself 36 holes from making history. Beginning the day two strokes back, Cheung carded a sensational eight-under-par 62 to move to 14 under overall, with Caleb Surratt alone in second on 11 under after also posting a 62. Overnight leaders Anirban Lahiri and Kevin Yuan could not match their first-round fireworks, with the former’s 68 leaving him in a tie for...

The head of the Asian Football Confederation said on Friday the regional body would support Gianni Infantino’s bid for re-election as Fifa president. Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the AFC president, had previously backed opposition to Infantino’s failed plan to sell off the commercial rights to Fifa tournaments, including the World Cup, to private investors. He had joined with the presidents of Uefa and Concacaf to pen an open letter calling the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan...
There was a moment on Thursday when history looked like being made at the Link Hong Kong Open, and while forgiving greens and some generous pins meant normal service was later restored, the glimpse on offer was of a local game in rude health. For the first time since the tournament began in 1959, two Hongkongers – Isaac Lam and Matthew Cheung – briefly sat at the top of the leaderboard at six-under-par. By the end of the day they were far from alone and further down the field than they might...
