Everett, United States, September 28, 2026 -- Alta Group Remodeling Highlights When Remodeling May Not Be the Right Investment for a Homeowner

A Seattle-area remodeling company says a major renovation should start with the homeowner’s long-term plan, not simply with the question of what can be built.

SEATTLE, Wash., Sept. 29, 2026 — A larger kitchen, an additional bedroom, or a major home addition can solve many problems, but remodeling is not automatically the right investment for every homeowner, according to Alta Group Remodeling.

The Seattle-area remodeling and custom construction company says one of the first questions it considers on a major project is not what a homeowner wants to build, but what they are trying to accomplish with the property and how long they expect to stay. That distinction can change the recommendation entirely.

Leo Lutskov, CEO and construction consultant at Alta Group Remodeling, recently described a consultation with a homeowner considering a substantial remodel. After discussing the property, Alta found that several of the homeowner’s biggest frustrations were tied to characteristics that a renovation could not realistically solve, including the sloped driveway and aspects of the property itself. Rather than recommend a project that could have required roughly $500,000 in improvements, Lutskov advised the homeowner to prepare the property for sale and look for a home that better matched his priorities.

“If you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a house and still don’t like the house when the project is finished, we haven’t solved the problem,” Lutskov said. “Our job is not to find the biggest remodel we can sell. It is to understand what the homeowner wants their life and their property to look like, and then determine whether remodeling actually gets them there.”

Alta Group Remodeling says the same analysis can lead to the opposite conclusion when homeowners like their property, neighborhood, and location but have outgrown the house itself. In one scenario Lutskov discussed, homeowners with a roughly 1,600-square-foot house wanted considerably more living space but did not want to leave their neighborhood. Alta evaluated an addition of nearly 1,000 square feet along with changes to the primary bedroom area. Lutskov estimated that improving the existing property could put the owners closer to the home they wanted without requiring them to purchase a substantially more expensive replacement property elsewhere. The point, according to Alta Group Remodeling, is not that remodeling is always preferable to moving or that moving is preferable to remodeling. The answer depends on what the homeowner likes about the existing property, what cannot be changed, how long the owner plans to stay and what the project is expected to accomplish.

Alta Group Remodeling uses that discussion to separate proposed improvements into three categories: essentials, upgrades, and wish-list items. The company also considers how work completed today could support later phases of the property without forcing homeowners to undo recently completed construction. For example, electrical, plumbing, or structural planning during an initial phase may be designed with a future addition or primary suite in mind, even when the homeowner does not intend to complete that portion immediately. That longer-term approach is particularly important for large renovations, additions, and accessory dwelling units, where the homeowner may be making decisions that affect the property for many years.

“I want to know the plan for the house,” Lutskov said. “If someone expects to leave in two years, the recommendation may be very different from what we would recommend to someone building a home for the next ten years.”

Alta Group Remodeling also says there are situations in which it will not move forward with a remodeling contract until the financial and practical reasoning behind the project makes sense to the homeowner. Lutskov describes that as a central part of the company’s consulting approach. Before a major project moves forward, Alta Group Remodeling wants the homeowner to be able to explain why the project is needed, how the completed space will be used, how the work fits into the owner’s plans for the property and whether the investment is one they are comfortable carrying. If those answers do not support the project, the company may recommend reducing the scope, postponing part of the work, or considering another property instead. The approach reflects a broader role Alta Group Remodeling is developing around remodeling strategy and project consultation. In addition to construction, the company works with homeowners during early planning, engineering, and permitting and can review existing plans or estimates before construction begins.

For homeowners deciding whether to renovate, Alta Group Remodeling recommends beginning with the issues that cannot be solved by finishes or additional square footage. Location, lot characteristics, neighborhood, long-term plans, and the homeowner’s overall relationship with the property can matter as much as the proposed floor plan.

Asian Games: Hong Kong star Ceci Lee hunting nemesis in quest to make ‘biggest step’

A “more relaxed and less stressed” Ceci Lee Sze-wing will face the challenge of overcoming two-time reigning champion and hometown favourite Yumi Kajihara in her hunt for a potentially career-shaping Asian Games gold. Lee will link up with Chloe Leung Wing-yee in the Madison on Thursday, but it is in the following day’s omnium, which head coach Herve Dagorne labelled “the queen event”, that the 25-year-old could establish herself as the continent’s most complete track cyclist. She has sacrificed...

Fifa Asean Cup: Hong Kong on brink of final as midfielder stars on return from exile

Vladica Grujic said Hong Kong played “a completely different level of football” from his Laos side, after the world No 186 ranked team were thumped 4-0 in the Fifa Asean Cup on Sunday. Sun Ming-him and Everton Camargo, brilliantly, netted in the opening half, before Dudu’s 55th-minute header defeated the flimsy defences of Souksamone Vethita, and Matt Orr emphatically converted a stoppage-time penalty. Unsurprisingly, Laos did not prove a hot ticket, although the 18,873 fans inside Kai Tak...

Pereira makes history with stunning 200m victory, Yan blows away field at Asian Games

Most of Sunday’s athletics events at the Asian Games were seen by many as background noise to the women’s javelin clash between China sensation Yan Ziyi and Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi, although don’t dare suggest that to Singapore’s Shanti Pereira. While the much-anticipated throwing competition was ultimately as damp as the rain that blanketed Nagoya for much of the day, Pereira’s breathless victory in the women’s 200m was everything sprinting is supposed to be. The 30-year-old’s successful...

China’s Wang Manyu beats Sun Yingsha in women’s singles table tennis final at Asian Games

China’s Wang Manyu beat compatriot and defending champion Sun Yingsha in the women’s singles final at the Asian Games on Sunday to cement her position as the sport’s new table tennis queen. Wang’s win came days after she displaced Sun at the top of the world rankings. China also enjoyed success in the men’s doubles final, with Huang Youzheng and Lin Shidong beating Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto and Hiroto Shinozuka 4-2. Wang reclaimed the title she last won at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018,...

China’s Zhu Yuanling wins street skateboarding – just the latest teen winner at Asian Games

China’s 15-year-old Zhu Yuanling won gold in the women’s street skateboarding competition at the Asian Games on Sunday, the latest in a series of young winners at this edition of the continental multi-sport event. Zhu’s win came a day after Japanese primary school student Yuki Kurihara, 11, demolished opponents three times his age on the way to a historic gold in esports. Earlier in the Games, Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi, 13, became one of the faces of the event with three golds, all in record...

Nichola Yuen loses 10lb claim with ‘surprise’ treble as Pierre Ng takes trainers’ title lead

Apprentice Nichola Yuen Hang-yiu continued a season full of milestones with her first Hong Kong treble at Sha Tin on Sunday which saw her claim reduced to 7lb. Perhaps fittingly, she claimed both accolades by edging out Zac Purton with a masterful ride to get Aeroinvincible from pillar to post in the Class Three Kestrel Handicap (1,400m). “It was a very tight finish, I thought I lost the race. I was riding against Zac Purton again and I beat him again, sorry not sorry,” Yuen joked. “Quite a few...

Invincible Ibis exceeds Mark Newnham’s expectations with thrilling first-up win in Celebration Cup

Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) hero Invincible Ibis exceeded trainer Mark Newnham’s expectations on his return to record a thrilling victory in the Group Three Celebration Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Handing Newnham and jockey Luke Ferraris back-to-back wins in the HK$4.2 million feature, Invincible Ibis ran on strongly from midfield and held off a late burst from Galaxy Patch to score by a neck. The son of Hellbent made a statement in his return from last season, which saw him claim Champion...

Asian Games, day 8: gold for squash, but ‘fencing Hong Kong’s No 1 sport,’ Fong says

The honour of winning Hong Kong’s fifth gold medal of the Asian Games fell to squash pair Lee Ka-yi and Tang Ming-hong on Sunday, and while it did not come with a place at the Los Angeles Olympics, it left the former feeling “amazing” and her partner “completely empty”. There was silver too, of course, with the final at Nagoya Kinjo-Futo Arena a clash against close friends and Hong Kong teammates Toby Tse Yee-lam and Lai Cheuk-nam. Another fencing bronze was added to the city’s growing tally,...

Mired in match-fixing scandal, Hong Kong’s next opponents Laos hope reinvention holds key

Vladica Grujic skirted the question over why he wanted to remain Laos head coach after the dismal fallout from their recent Asean Championship campaign, but the inquiry was valid. The opponents for Hong Kong’s opening Fifa Asean Cup match at Kai Tak Stadium on Sunday, Laos made wholesale changes for the tournament after the country’s football federation called for an investigation into alleged match-fixing, bribery and illegal gambling among its own squad following a series of heavy Asean...

China’s ‘invincible’ Zhang Ziyu helps women’s basketball team claim bronze at Asian Games

Zhang Ziyu played a starring role to drag China to women’s basketball bronze at the Asian Games on Saturday, with her coach predicting the teenager standing 2.2 metres (7-foot-3) will one day be “invincible”. The 19-year-old is already taller than NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal and she made full use of her advantage as China beat Chinese Taipei 77-64 in the third-place match in Nagoya. Zhang has made a name for herself in recent weeks, impressing American superstar Caitlin Clark at the Women’s...

North Korea’s weightlifters target Olympic gold rush after world record haul at Asian Games

North Korea’s weightlifters will flex their considerable collective muscle when they return to the Olympics for the first time in 12 years at Los Angeles in 2028 – and they could be in for an American gold rush if the Asian Games are any indication. The secretive nation has been the dominant force in global weightlifting since emerging from self-imposed Covid exile to smash six world records at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023. They also won six golds. At the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan...
