Research shows one in five UK adults would rely on borrowing to cover an unexpected £250 expense
London, England, United Kingdom, November 3, 2026 -- Cashfloat, a UK-based direct lender providing borrowing options for unexpected expenses, is highlighting the financial pressures that even relatively small unplanned-for expenses can create for households. This follows research revealing that 21% of adults would need to take out borrowing or credit to cover an emergency £250 bill.
The findings, published by Standard Life as part of its Retirement Voice 2025 research, also show that 5% of adults would be unable to pay this expense at all, emphasising the difficulties families without accessible savings face when they need to manage unexpected costs.

Why UK Families Are Struggling to Manage Modest Additional Expenses
Chief Operating Officer Peter Kimpton from Cashfloat explains, ‘Unexpected outgoings don’t necessarily need to be large to put a household in difficulty if their income is already committed to essential bills. Understanding what is affordable, planning for occasional costs where possible, and knowing how to find reliable financial guidance can all help consumers make better-informed decisions when their circumstances change.’
The research, which involved 6,000 adult participants, found that, in addition to the headline outcomes:
Data also points to wider concerns, with 23% of participants saying they were finding it difficult to manage on their current income. 30% cited inflation and rising prices as concerns, and 28% commented on rising household energy costs.
For those already trying to balance income against committed outgoings, unexpected bills can therefore leave them without the room to adjust their spending. Without any savings buffer, consumers may feel that borrowing is their only option, even if additional repayments could put their budgets under more pressure.
How Households May Be Able to Improve Their Financial Resilience
Cashfloat has encouraged consumers to take stock of their existing financial position before making decisions about borrowing, and to consider how sustainable repayments would be before applying for a loan. Practical steps that may be useful in helping households prepare for unexpected costs include:
Although building significant savings can be difficult for households living month to month, establishing a small contingency fund can be a beneficial starting point.
Regularly reviewing household expenditure may also reveal opportunities to cut costs, such as comparing insurance renewal premiums, deciding whether subscriptions are necessary and checking utility tariffs between providers.
Guidance for Households Dealing with Micro Financial Emergencies
For consumers who do need to consider borrowing to manage an urgent, unexpected expense, the priority should be on understanding the commitment they are making, rather than picking a lender or product based only on how quickly funds might become available.
Short-term credit can prove a solution for some unexpected expenses but may not be suitable for every situation or household, especially where income is already insufficient to cover essential outgoings, or families are repeatedly applying for more credit.
Peter adds, ‘Financial resilience doesn’t look the same between every household. The important aspect is to have control over your own budget, consider all of the options available to you, and avoid taking on repayments that could make an already tricky financial situation harder to manage.
The findings from this report underline how essential financial awareness, realistic budgeting and guidance are for consumers handling unexpected costs. While it might be impossible to forecast every expense, taking steps to improve financial resilience can help to reduce reliance on borrowing when something urgent arises.’

Repeatedly launching the bowling of Ben Stokes into a steamy Indian night to win the 2016 T20 World Cup final grew to feel like a “burden and a curse” for Carlos Brathwaite. As the giant West Indian all-rounder sent a fourth successive delivery from the England star over the ropes, prompting scenes of jubilation and desolation in equal measure inside Kolkata’s Eden Gardens stadium, commentator Ian Bishop bellowed: “Carlos Brathwaite. Remember the name.” “That immortalised the moment,” Brathwaite...
Frankie Lor Fu-chuen couldn’t be happier with Numbers and Massive Sovereign as he prepares for a dual-pronged assault on Sunday’s Group Three Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse (1,800m) at Sha Tin. Lor will unleash Numbers for the first time this season after a terrific four-year-old campaign, which included Group Three glory in the Centenary Vase (1,800m) and seconds in the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) and Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m). Massive Sovereign heads into the feature fresh from a...
Formula 1’s youngest champion Kimi Antonelli has nothing to prove and could be one of the greats, according to his Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. The 20-year-old clinched the title in Mexico City on Sunday to also become the first Italian Formula 1 world champion in 73 years. Wolff, whose team took Britain’s Lewis Hamilton to six of his seven championships and also Germany’s Nico Rosberg to the crown in 2016, said Antonelli had exceeded all expectations and was likely to take more titles in...
Fresh from a successful comeback from injury, British jockey Hollie Doyle will return to Hong Kong for another winter stint from November 29 to January 31. The Jockey Club confirmed on Monday that Doyle has been granted a visiting jockey’s licence “with a view to start accepting race riding engagements on December 2”. The 30-year-old was sidelined for five months by a complex lower-leg fracture suffered in a fall in May, but returned with victory in her first ride back at Southwell on...
A former bodybuilder who grew up in a Pakistani refugee camp and idolises Arnold Schwarzenegger has captained Afghanistan to victory in a cosmopolitan Hong Kong Cricket Sixes that “showcased this vibrant city to the world”. He was aided by the unheralded Imran Mir, who had mustered one run from his previous two innings in the tournament, but smote 53 from 14 balls in the final as the Afghans chased 116 to beat Australia by four wickets on Sunday and become the Sixes’ eighth different...
Francis Lui Kin-wai and Karis Teetan heaped praise on Turquoise Velocity after the consistent sprinter broke through for a deserved victory in Sunday’s Class Two Kwangtung Handicap Cup (1,200m) at Happy Valley. Placed in three consecutive starts heading into Sunday’s race, the Zoustar gelding impressed his trainer and jockey with his ability to chase and win after leading all the way in his previous triumphs. Sent out the $3.1 favourite, Turquoise Velocity tracked the pacesetter Rising Force and...
Vincent Ho Chak-yiu took a huge step towards a berth in next month’s Longines International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) with a double at Happy Valley’s only day meeting of the season on Sunday. The four-time Tony Cruz Award winner entered the day fourth in the jockeys’ premiership and already in position for a coveted slot at the IJC, but a brace of winners put him right where he needs to be with seven meetings to go until the cut off. With Zac Purton already confirmed for the IJC as Hong Kong’s...
Hong Kong tennis star Coleman Wong Chak-lam settled for second best in yet another ATP Challenger final after losing 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 to France’s Térence Atmane at the Seoul Open on Sunday. The defeat pushed Wong’s career ATP Challenger finals record to 1-7, with his only victory coming in Jiujiang in China in May, when he edged Adam Walton of Australia 7-5, 7-6 to become the first Hongkonger to ever win an ATP title. Last weekend, Wong lost to Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate in the final of the ATP...
The inaugural Heung Yee Kuk Northern Metropolis Marathon drew praise from elite and international runners for its novel route along the newly opened Fanling Bypass, even as unseasonal morning heat, rolling slopes and initial logistical hiccups pushed competitors to their limits. Concluding at midday on Sunday, the race drew roughly 15,000 mostly local entrants, with Hong Kong runners sweeping top honours across almost all divisions except the men’s half-marathon, which was won by a competitor...
Lewis Hamilton said his success in becoming Formula One’s oldest pole sitter since 1982 is down to a love of racing that helps keep him “young and fit” at 41. The seven-time champion claimed his maiden pole with Ferrari and his first since 2023 on Saturday, topping the qualifying times ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell at the Mexico City Grand Prix. It made him the oldest pole sitter since Mario Andretti’s final pole with Ferrari at the 1982 Italian Grand Prix – when the Italian-American was 42...
Darren Gough has thrown his weight behind plans to take the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes global in the image of rugby sevens’ world series. In the city to commentate on this year’s ongoing edition, former England fast bowler Gough also slammed the “lack of accountability” for his own country’s cricketing “demise over the past two years”. Ahead of the 2026 Sixes, local cricket chiefs established a partnership with giant Indian enterprise JSW Sports, intended to accelerate the introduction of a...
