Conor Canning's Personal Best Fitness Launches Forever Active PLUS Classes for Older Australians

Nov 8, 2026

Former real estate agency director and Bachelor in Paradise star Conor Canning's gym, Personal Best Fitness, will run Forever Active PLUS exercise classes for older adults from November 2026, funded by Primary Health Tasmania and offered at no cost.

Australia, November 8, 2026 -- Personal Best Fitness, the North Hobart gym co-owned by entrepreneur and podcast host Conor Canning, will launch Forever Active PLUS in November 2026. The weekly exercise program for older adults is funded by Primary Health Tasmania and offered at no cost to participants.

Classes will run at Margate Hall on Mondays, the Claremont Girl Guide Hall on Wednesdays and the Personal Best Fitness studio in North Hobart on Fridays. The program is open to people aged 60 and over, and to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 45 and over. Each participant completes a health assessment on joining and every six months after, so progress can be measured. Classes suit people managing arthritis, diabetes, heart conditions and balance problems, and are led by instructors with Level 4 fitness qualifications and specialist older-adult training. According to the federal Centre for Population, Tasmania remains Australia's oldest state.

"We've run senior classes for more than ten years and we've watched what it does to people," said Canning. "Mobility comes back, confidence comes back, and people who were isolated end up with a whole group of friends. We wanted more people to get that, not just the ones who can afford a gym membership."

Two of the gym's longest-standing members are the program's ambassadors. Julie, 79, had never set foot in a gym until she joined the seniors classes after the death of her husband, Ray. She credits the group with supporting her through that period, and says her doctor recently remarked on how much her mobility had improved. Barb, 71, has trained at the gym for years and says she notices the difference in her mood and mobility whenever she takes time off.

"We're not trying to turn 75-year-olds into athletes," said Canning. "We're trying to keep people on their feet and out of hospital. Most of the people who need this most won't walk into a gym on their own, so we're taking the classes to community halls instead."

Personal Best Fitness has operated in North Hobart since 1998. In August it won the Customer Service Excellence Award at the inaugural Greater Hobart Small Business Excellence Awards, chosen from 21 finalists. Canning also co-owns Health & Leisure, a fitness equipment retailer founded in 1992 that carries the largest range of gym equipment in Tasmania. It supplies commercial gyms and hotels and works with customers from beginners to Olympic athletes.

Before moving into fitness and small business, Canning built an award-winning real estate career. He rose to agency director and won the Real Estate Institute of Tasmania's Large Residential Agency of the Year. He became known to national audiences on Channel Ten's Bachelor in Paradise, where he met his now-wife, Mary Viturino. The couple are raising five children together. He has also appeared in Deadloch, the Amazon Original series that reached the top 10 on Prime Video in more than 165 countries.

"Being in the public eye brings blessings and challenges in equal measure," said Canning. "When you stumble, and I stumbled, there is nowhere to hide. I lost everything. Once the storm cleared I came out a better person, more resilient and grateful for every lesson. Fitness was the foundation that got me through, and that is why this program matters so much to me."

During that period Canning supported JCP Youth's mentoring programs and worked with Anglicare supporting people experiencing homelessness. He serves as a board director of Kids Safe.

His wider work centres on helping Australian small business owners succeed. Through his work with Peninsula AU, Australia's largest provider of employment relations and HR services, he meets business owners every day. He hosts The Better Business Podcast with Conor Canning and publishes The HR Edge, a LinkedIn newsletter read by thousands of subscribers. His combined social audience is nearly 50,000.

"Small business owners are the backbone of this economy," said Canning. "Personal Best is a small business doing what small businesses do best, which is looking after its community. That is the story I tell on the podcast, and it is the one I get to live every day at the gym."

Registrations for Forever Active PLUS are open now by phone or email, and participants can also attend on the day once classes begin. More from Conor Canning is available at personalbestfitness.com.au.

Andrew Wright fears that leading triathletes could desert the sport to compete in “simpler and easier” Hyrox, which this week inched closer to Olympic recognition. Hong Kong head coach Wright, whose team are set for a World Cup leg on Central Harbourfront this weekend, did not, however, share the concerns of triathletes who have voiced concerns over Hyrox potentially ousting their sport from the Games programme, after it announced a strategic partnership with World Triathlon. Hong Kong tennis chief eyes training centre in Spain to improve skills of young players

Hong Kong tennis chief Michael Cheng Ming-git revealed plans to improve the skills of young players by sending them overseas to a training centre in Europe. Teenage players who were on the professional tennis path would be expected to spend several years playing at a higher level outside Hong Kong in Spain because “that is the only way up” in the game, according to Cheng. Spain was chosen as the location for the training centre because of its competitive environment and track record of producing...

David Silva in Hong Kong: ex-Manchester City star not ruling out Sha Tin return

David Silva said he would “not close the door” on the possibility of repeating his headline-grabbing guest appearance for Supreme Sha Tin this weekend, as the club’s ambitious owner acknowledged he would gladly keep doling out bumper pay cheques to keep the World Cup winner on board. Still, Jim Wong Chi-chuen, who has granted Silva a “seven-figure” Hong Kong dollar payday to play against BC Rangers at a sold-out Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground on Saturday, said that for the 40-year-old to commit...

Cristiano Ronaldo’s international retirement in stark contrast to great rival Lionel Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo’s glorious Portugal career ultimately ended in acrimony. What a contrast to his great rival Lionel Messi, who also retired from international football this year, but only after leading Argentina to back-to-back World Cup finals. As has been the case throughout their record-breaking careers, it is impossible not to compare the two greatest players of their generation and, for many, the greatest of all time. While Ronaldo’s video message to announce his retirement on Thursday was...

Japan’s Tashima aims to ‘uphold integrity’ in run against Infantino for Fifa president

Kozo Tashima first started playing football after watching the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and since then he has dedicated his life to developing the sport’s growth in Japan. The 68-year-old is set to become the first person from Japan to run for the Fifa presidency after announcing he would stand against Gianni Infantino in football’s governing body’s election in March. Tashima has served as a football player, coach and bureaucrat and has a reputation for being a safe pair of hands. He rarely makes...

Trailblazing World Fencing League sticking to guns ahead of Hong Kong debut

The World Fencing League is sticking to its guns in its quest to showcase the sport “in a dynamic format and grow its global fan base”, ahead of the trailblazing competition’s Hong Kong debut next year. Founded by Olympic bronze medallist Miles Chamley-Watson, the WFL staged a glitzy, sell-out inaugural event in Los Angeles seven months ago. But the league last month found itself in a squabble with the International Fencing Federation (FIE), after the global governing body issued a waspish...

China’s Wang Xinyu says ‘it’s been a challenging year’ as her season ends at Hong Kong Open

It was not just the “basic stuff” on the court: Wang Xinyu also wants to improve the mental side after her season ended on Thursday at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open. Tournament sixth seed Wang did not look at her best throughout the match as she lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to Antonia Ruzic, failing to get past the second round on her third appearance in the city. The world No 81 Croatian, who is ranked more than 40 places below Wang, will now play Philippines sensation Alexandra Eala, who beat the...

NBA deal with prediction-market platforms Kalshi, Polymarket a double-edged sword: experts

Sports experts and former basketball executives believe that the partnership between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and leading prediction-market platforms Kalshi and Polymarket could be a double-edged sword if not properly managed and supervised. While there was an obvious consensus that the deal was about money, the flip side was that it could drive fan engagement up or down and even pose reputational risks to the league. The agreement was announced late last month, but without...

Pierre Ng banking on ‘tougher’ Le Zonda as he faces Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse test at Sha Tin

Pierre Ng Pang-chi is hoping Le Zonda has toughened up since his last run as his promising stayer faces the biggest test of his career in the Group Three Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse (1,800m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The two-time Irish winner pre-import made quite the impression to cap off last season, breaking through locally at the seventh attempt when sweeping from the back of the field for a comfortable success at Happy Valley over 1,800m. He followed up with a similar performance a month later,...

Japanese swimmer Tomoru Honda to miss 2028 Olympics after ban for dangerous driving

The Japan Swimming Federation on Wednesday banned world champion swimmer Tomoru Honda until August 2028 over a high-speed car crash last year. The 21-month suspension for the 24-year-old effectively rules him out of the Los Angeles Olympics, with federation officials stating the decision will not be changed. The two-week Olympics start on July 14. According to the indictment, on the morning of November 21 last year in Tama, western Tokyo, Honda drove at speeds between 88km/h (55mph) and 108km/h...
