NIL Club Data Shows Brands Are Looking Beyond Follower Counts in College Sports

Oct 1, 2026

ATLANTA - Oct. 1, 2026 - PRLog -- NIL Club today highlighted results from recent brand campaigns that show why follower count alone is becoming a less useful measure of a college athlete's marketing value.

That distinction is particularly important in college sports, where most athletes are not national celebrities. A football star with hundreds of thousands of followers can deliver broad awareness, while a swimmer, volleyball player or Division III athlete may offer a smaller but highly relevant audience.

"The athletes driving real results for our partners are not always the ones with the biggest audiences," said Mick Assaf, CEO and co-founder of NIL Club. "College athletes have credibility within their teams, campuses and communities. When the right athlete reaches the right audience, that connection can turn into measurable action."

The clearest evidence comes from conversion. For SoFi, a campaign through NIL Club generated more than 47,000 new accounts, with nearly 60 percent of them funded. That funding rate was close to five times the roughly 12 percent industry benchmark.

A separate campaign for a major cryptocurrency exchange generated roughly 4,800 referred sign-ups and more than 2,600 funded accounts, about a 54 percent sign-up-to-funded rate, compared with roughly 12 percent from cold paid social. More than 1,600 of those customers went on to place a first trade.

Content campaigns have produced similar results. For a nationwide Subway activation, more than 170 college athletes created nearly 200 pieces of original content over three weeks, generating more than a million views and a combined engagement rate above 8 percent across TikTok, Instagram Reels and Instagram Stories. Rather than building the campaign around one athlete with a massive national following, Subway worked across athletes from different sports, schools and communities.

The approach reflects a broader change in creator marketing. Brands are increasingly looking at engagement, audience fit and measurable performance alongside reach when deciding which creators can deliver value.

"Reach will always matter for the right campaign," Assaf said. "But it should not be the only measure of an athlete's value. If an athlete can create effective content, connect with the right audience and produce a measurable result, brands should be paying attention."

For college athlete marketing, the shift gives brands more ways to define influence and athletes a chance to demonstrate it.

Zheng Qinwen in confident mood ahead of China Open, but admits to pressure of playing at home

Zheng Qinwen begins her China Open campaign on Friday confident she can recapture the form that made her among the best women’s players in the world, despite the pressures that come from trying to win at home. The former world No 4 and Olympic gold medallist said she was fully prepared for what lay ahead, even though she dropped outside the top 100 at one stage this season. But an impressive run to the quarter-finals of the US Open has helped her bounce back to near the top 50, and good...

Asian Games crowds ‘disappointing’ as 998 fans watch football in 50,000-seat stadium

Under 1,000 spectators watched Asian Games hosts Japan beat South Korea in the semi-finals of the women’s football at a 50,000-capacity stadium, with a top official admitting Wednesday that attendances at some events were “disappointing”. Japanese organisers have been on the defensive over ticket sales since the opening ceremony on September 19 took place in front of thousands of empty seats in Nagoya. Officials said on that occasion that the threat of a typhoon put people off, and heavy rain...

Manchester City guilty of using ‘sham’ deals to distort finances, Premier League says

Manchester City used “sham” commercial contracts as part of schemes to inflate revenue and understate costs by more than £900 million over nearly a decade, the Premier League said on Tuesday after an independent commission ruled the club guilty of serious breaches of financial rules. The commission found City guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the league’s financial rules over nine seasons, between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 campaigns, as well as three of four charges concerning their...

Man City might be biggest cheats sporting world has ever seen. What comes next?

“Don’t get me started on financial fair play,” Vincent Kompany said, immediately after his Bayern Munich team had beaten Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly at Kai Tak Stadium last month. The same billionaire-owned Aston Villa that in May won the Europa League; that is competing in this season’s Champions League, yet was forced to sell a host of A-list stars over the summer to comply with financial regulations. As Bayern head coach, Kompany hugely benefits from the spending restrictions that...

Hong Kong’s Asian Games mix of good, bad and ugly, but record medal haul still possible

Hong Kong’s athletes were sent to the Asian Games in Japan this month with the demand they “achieve even greater success, bringing more glory to the country and Hong Kong” and the weight of a city’s considerable expectations on their shoulders. In this instance, greater success is surpassing the record 53 medals won in Hangzhou three years ago, although the message might also have been “look at how much money we give you, don’t disappoint us”. Whether the 580 sportsmen and women tasked with...

Hong Kong’s bruising WXV Challenger part of journey to becoming ‘force on world stage’

As the dust settles on their intense and increasingly fraught home WXV Challenger campaign, Hong Kong have begun absorbing the salutary lessons they received over what it will take to fulfil their goal of becoming “a force on the world stage”. After beginning with a gutsy, if slightly fortunate, win over Brazil, the city team were flattened by eventual champions Fiji in their second match. Favourites going into their closing fixture on Saturday against Samoa, they trailed from the second minute...
