Parents Can Help Their Kids Avoid Substance Use, says Intermountain Children's Health

Intermountain Health Primary Children's community health experts give tips for parents to help prevent teen substance use.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (PRUnderground) October 1st, 2026

Preventing teen substance use can start at home. When parents maintain open communication, stay engaged in their teen's life, and set clear boundaries, they can build trust and encourage their children to seek guidance when questions or challenges arise.

Three points for parents to know:

  1. 1. Start early. Begin age-appropriate conversations as early as age nine, before a child is offered alcohol, nicotine, or another substance.

  1. 2. Listen before you lecture. Ask what your child has seen or heard, listen without judgment, and keep the conversation going.

  1. 3. Make your home safer. Secure medications, alcohol, nicotine, and other products, and safely dispose of unused medication.

Start the conversation early

Nine can sound young, but this doesn't need to be a big, formal talk about drugs. The goal is to start with simple, age-appropriate conversations and build from there.

"Start the conversation before there's a problem. A few minutes now can make it easier for your child to come to you later," said Danielle Chunglo, community health coordinator at Intermountain Health Primary Children's Hospitals.

Children may already see vaping, alcohol, or other substances online, at school, or in advertising. Parents want to become a trusted source of information before their child is offered a substance. Experts recommend starting these conversations as early as age nine.

What does this conversation sound like for a kid?

Keep it simple. You could ask, "What have you heard about vaping?" or "What do you think about what you saw online?"

Then listen. You don't need to correct every word or turn the moment into a lecture. Children need to know they can ask questions and get a calm, honest response.

"You don't have to know all the answers. Ask, listen, and let your child know the conversation is always open," Chunglo said.

Parents can also point out how advertising targets young people and help children recognize those tactics.

What can parents do at home to help prevent substance use?

Connection matters. Spend regular one-on-one time together. Know your child's friends and what's happening in their life.

"Prevention starts with two things parents can do today: Stay connected and reduce access," said  Chunglo.

Parents can also reduce access. Secure prescription medications, alcohol, nicotine, and other products. Take unused medications to a local drug take-back program.

Warning signs should parents

There isn't one change that proves a teen is using substances. Look for several changes happening together, such as:

  • - A sudden shift in friends, activities, or behavior.
    - Unexplained spending or missing items at home.
    - Coughing, low energy, appetite changes, or unusual smells.
    - Withdrawal from family or usual activities.

These signs may have many causes. They give parents a reason to check in, not a reason to accuse.

If parents do find substances in the house from their teen, first, pause and take a breath. A response driven by fear or anger can shut down the conversation.

Ask what happened and listen. Try to understand what may be behind the use. Stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, or social pressure can play a role for some young people. Understanding the reason doesn't mean accepting the behavior. It helps the family identify the right support.

Zheng Qinwen in confident mood ahead of China Open, but admits to pressure of playing at home

Zheng Qinwen begins her China Open campaign on Friday confident she can recapture the form that made her among the best women’s players in the world, despite the pressures that come from trying to win at home. The former world No 4 and Olympic gold medallist said she was fully prepared for what lay ahead, even though she dropped outside the top 100 at one stage this season. But an impressive run to the quarter-finals of the US Open has helped her bounce back to near the top 50, and good...

Asian Games crowds ‘disappointing’ as 998 fans watch football in 50,000-seat stadium

Under 1,000 spectators watched Asian Games hosts Japan beat South Korea in the semi-finals of the women’s football at a 50,000-capacity stadium, with a top official admitting Wednesday that attendances at some events were “disappointing”. Japanese organisers have been on the defensive over ticket sales since the opening ceremony on September 19 took place in front of thousands of empty seats in Nagoya. Officials said on that occasion that the threat of a typhoon put people off, and heavy rain...

Manchester City guilty of using ‘sham’ deals to distort finances, Premier League says

Manchester City used “sham” commercial contracts as part of schemes to inflate revenue and understate costs by more than £900 million over nearly a decade, the Premier League said on Tuesday after an independent commission ruled the club guilty of serious breaches of financial rules. The commission found City guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the league’s financial rules over nine seasons, between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 campaigns, as well as three of four charges concerning their...

Man City might be biggest cheats sporting world has ever seen. What comes next?

“Don’t get me started on financial fair play,” Vincent Kompany said, immediately after his Bayern Munich team had beaten Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly at Kai Tak Stadium last month. The same billionaire-owned Aston Villa that in May won the Europa League; that is competing in this season’s Champions League, yet was forced to sell a host of A-list stars over the summer to comply with financial regulations. As Bayern head coach, Kompany hugely benefits from the spending restrictions that...

Hong Kong’s Asian Games mix of good, bad and ugly, but record medal haul still possible

Hong Kong’s athletes were sent to the Asian Games in Japan this month with the demand they “achieve even greater success, bringing more glory to the country and Hong Kong” and the weight of a city’s considerable expectations on their shoulders. In this instance, greater success is surpassing the record 53 medals won in Hangzhou three years ago, although the message might also have been “look at how much money we give you, don’t disappoint us”. Whether the 580 sportsmen and women tasked with...

Hong Kong’s bruising WXV Challenger part of journey to becoming ‘force on world stage’

As the dust settles on their intense and increasingly fraught home WXV Challenger campaign, Hong Kong have begun absorbing the salutary lessons they received over what it will take to fulfil their goal of becoming “a force on the world stage”. After beginning with a gutsy, if slightly fortunate, win over Brazil, the city team were flattened by eventual champions Fiji in their second match. Favourites going into their closing fixture on Saturday against Samoa, they trailed from the second minute...
