Personal Training Studio in Alexandria Proves LPDs Sculpt the Upper Body Best. A popular strength-training exercise, the lat pulldown (LPD), has been shown to help define the arms, create sculpted shoulders, and provide a leaner looking waist. LPD's develop the latissimus dorsi muscle or “lats.”

A recent study reveals that under the guidance of a fitness trainer, the lat pulldown (latissimus dorsi pulldown), also known as the LPD, is a highly effective exercise for strengthening the muscles of the back and arms, defining the arms, creating sculpted shoulders, and providing a lean waist. The research provides ample evidence for the LPD’s ability to positively affect numerous muscles in this region of the body. The LPD develops the latissimus dorsi muscle or “lats,” a large, flat muscle that covers the back and stretches to the sides and behind the arms, and the trapezius muscle or “traps” of the upper back. In addition, the other major muscles strengthened are the pectoralis major of the chest, the posterior deltoids of the shoulders, and the biceps brachii of the upper arm.
The benefits of the LPD were demonstrated in a 2009 study by sports physiologists from the University of South Carolina in Spartanburg. As the researchers state, “The results show that untrained individuals can voluntarily increase the activity of a specified muscle group during the performance of a multi-joint resistance exercise.” Specifically, the study’s participants showed a “voluntary increase in latissimus dorsi muscle activity during the lat pull-down following expert instruction.” In other words, after being trained in the LPD by a fitness trainer, the participants’ strength in the latissimus dorsi was enhanced.
Practicing the LPD involves an individual sitting at a lateral pulldown machine with arms raised in front of the body, while holding onto the handles. As the handles are pulled down toward the floor, the shoulder blades are also pulled down, with the lower trapezius muscles performing this action. As the upper arms come down, the elbows bend, bringing the wrists closer to the shoulders. Here is where the biceps come into play. The forearms are also heavily used in the LPD, having the most basic role in the pulldown — maintaining the grip on the handles. And finally, the abdominal muscles are used significantly to stabilize the torso during the exercise.
LPD strength training gives an individual a sculpted appearance by training the musculature of the back, giving it a ‘V’ shape and reducing the fat that develops on the sides known as the “love handles,” so that they become less noticeable. The lat pulldown also helps to improve the appearance of the arms, making the upper arm muscles more defined because, as mentioned, the biceps and shoulders are intimately involved in the exercise.
As shown by the University of South Carolina study, to get the most out of the LPD, working with a trainer provides the proper coaching and guidance. Fatiguing the muscles to the point of fatigue or “muscle success” is the way to gain the most from doing LPD fitness training. In just one LPD set performed once or twice a week, the major muscles of the upper body are trained while the shape, tone and strength of the back and arms are improved.
