"The Tree of Cinema" Installation Brought Film History and Its Audiences Together at TIFF 2026

Oct 18, 2026

Created by Yury Goncharov and Alina Tacmelova at Toronto International Film Festival's personal invitation, the monumental public artwork explores cinema as a living archive of collective memory.

TORONTO - Oct. 18, 2026 - PRLog -- Created exclusively for TIFF at the festival's invitation, "The Tree of Cinema" by Toronto-based artists Yury Goncharov and Alina Tacmelova marked the opening of the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. The installation appeared on Festival Street near Roy Thomson Hall from September 10–13.

Standing 11 feet tall with a nine-foot-wide canopy, the sculpture reimagines a tree through the materials and imagery of filmmaking. Its patinated steel trunk evokes cinema's industrial foundations. Hundreds of flowing strips resembling film combine recognizable cinematic moments with photographs of audiences watching, gathering, laughing, crying, and reflecting.

Drawing on the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge, the work explores how stories and experiences pass between generations. It also takes inspiration from Agnès Varda's human approach to memory, everyday life, and filmmaking.

"We wanted to give physical form to something that usually remains invisible: what people carry with them after a film ends," the artists explain.

Visitors could walk around and beneath the canopy, entering a structure that celebrates cinema as a shared experience. As films are increasingly watched alone on personal screens, the installation highlighted the social ritual of strangers gathering around the same story. Festival Street audiences responded enthusiastically, while TIFF organizers noted its emotional connection with viewers.

Art critic and AICA member Julia Sysalova observed that placing spectators alongside film imagery gives audiences a visible role in cinematic history, turning the act of looking into a spatial encounter.

Goncharov contributed sculptural thinking, engineering, and material experimentation; Tacmelova brought research into memory, human connection, and participation. Toronto-area studio Custom Engineered Arts fabricated the installation, translating the concept into a large-scale sculpture. Following its Festival Street presentation, the work will move to TIFF Lightbox, the festival's year-round Toronto home.

Knicks chase back-to-back titles in NBA built to stop dynasties, face LeBron James first up

New York have barely stopped celebrating their first NBA title in 53 years, and the Knicks are already chasing a repeat in a league that is built to stop one. The NBA has crowned a record eight different champions in the past eight seasons. Rules that make it tougher to ‌stack a roster with superstars have turned the league into a free-for-all. The Knicks, however, have a big edge: the band is back together. New York return their five best players – Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG...

Ka Ying Rising falls agonisingly short of back-to-back Everest wins as Tempted hangs on

Ka Ying Rising’s record winning streak came to an end in dramatic style in the world’s richest turf race on Saturday after the Hong Kong champion’s agonisingly close defeat in the Group One The Everest (1,200m) at Randwick. Chad Schofield optimistic Tempted has what it takes to dethrone Ka Ying Rising in The Everest

Chad Schofield rates Ka Ying Rising “probably one of the best we’ve ever seen”, but the former Hong Kong-based jockey is confident his The Everest mount Tempted has what it takes to beat the world’s best galloper at Randwick on Saturday. Hong Kong champion Ka Ying Rising chases a 22nd straight victory in the world’s richest turf race, but a rain-affected track and Tempted’s hot form has boosted Schofield’s confidence. Since running second to Ka Ying Rising in The Everest (1,200m) 12 months ago,...

Hong Kong Olympian wonders if AI is the answer to recapturing our humanity

The 0.1 second that stood between Yvette Kong Man-yi and qualifying for the 2012 Olympics was “unbearable”, the Hong Kong swimmer writes in her newly published memoir, The Unmeasured Human. It was, the 33-year-old recalls years later, “too small to feel and too large to survive unchanged”. Fourteen years on, Kong is grateful for the heartbreaking experience, telling the South China Morning Post that “challenge is fundamental to human growth and spirit”. “I needed to find the courage to try again...

AFC Champions League 2: Hong Kong’s Tai Po ‘cross a line’ but fail to tame Lion City Sailors

Streetwise Lion City Sailors condemned Tai Po to a 1-0 AFC Champions League 2 defeat at Mong Kok Stadium on Thursday, but victorious boss Mark Jackson accused the hosts of “crossing a line” in their attempts to ruffle the Singaporean team. A husk of the side that was unbeaten at home in last season’s competition, following a summer firesale, Tai Po nevertheless ran themselves into the ground in a vain attempt to recover from the blow of Matthias Phaeton’s strike shortly after half-time. While...
